R Venkatesan quit his job at a multi-national company to sell vegetables online via Veggibazaar.com in Chennai:
R Venkatesan

The year 2008 was a time of pink slips and thinning salaries. For 33-year-old R Venkatesan, it was a good time to change gears and drop out of the corporate rat race. It took a salary cut to make him question the safety of his job-back then he was heading country-wide marketing for a project by Hewlett Packard. So, the Chennai resident decided to switch to a job that would ensure a steady income irrespective of the state of the economy-selling vegetables.

Blinked, didn't you? This is the same reaction that Venkatesan got from his friends when he proposed the idea of Veggibazaar.com, an online vegetable store. "I was quitting a job that was paying me about Rs 2 lakh a month despite the recession. Few people believed that my idea would work. They cited the example of a person who had floated a similar company a few years ago, which bombed due to the lack of Internet penetration," says Venkatesan.

So, by the time he started his business in 2009, he was sure of two things-he needed to start on a small scale and then give it ample time to grow. The ace up his sleeve? He had about eight years of experience in the marketing division of major software companies, which taught him that as long as one sticks to the basics, a business will do well. "I was targeting people who were hard-pressed to take out time to buy vegetables daily," says Venkatesan.

He initially spent Rs 40 lakh to start the company, mainly to buy cutting and chopping machines, pay a monthly rent of Rs 30,000 for an office space and to print covers for packing boxes. This amount came from his savings. Venkatesan admits that it helped that his wife had a job as a senior business analyst with a software company. "If she hadn't been earning, it would have been difficult to even think of quitting my job," he adds.

His business model is simple: Veggibazaar.com takes orders online and delivers the very next day. This not only ensures freshness of the products-an essential feature of the company-but also means that he does not have to worry about bulk storage space and associated facilities, which is a huge saving. "The orders are put together by about 10 p.m., after which we inform the vendors about the order. We buy from Koyambedu and farms in Chengalpet, Tindivanam and Kodaikanal," shares Venkatesan.

Vegetables reach the company's Alwarpet office by 6.30 a.m. the following day and, after a quality check, they are sorted, cleaned, chopped, packed and delivered between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Venkatesan has 25 employees to do these jobs. Clients can pay online through debit/credit cards or pay cash on delivery. Venkatesan has also started providing additional facilities, such as nutritional specific packages and loyalty points which customers can redeem against future purchases.

Since its launch, Venkatesan has pumped another Rs 1.2 crore into the company, of which Rs 60 lakh came from the couple's saving, Rs 40 lakh was raised by diluting the shares through a CA firm, while the balance was borrowed from family and friends. Venkatesan's effort is beginning to pay off. The company broke even in March this year, and has
been yielding monthly revenues of about Rs 11 lakh ever since.
Venkatesan says that he is now looking at the franchisee model for further expansion, both within Chennai and outside, starting with cities such as BangaloreTrichy and Coimbatore

The Windows 8 features were finally unveiled today at Anaheim Convention Center – Build Online Event. We are going to give you a quick overview of the same on discussing about the few important features.
First of all everything that currently runs on Windows 7 would work for sure on the Windows 8 based computers which means that you don’t have to worry about the compatibility of different programs and hardware. Windows 8 uses less Memory Processes when compared to the Windows 7 based computers and this was demonstrated during the Live Event. A Netbook which was using 404Mb with 32 processes on Win 7 was using 281Mb with 29 processes in the background on the Win 8 which clearly shows the efficiency and the use of hardware, making the other memory available for you.
Customized Login System : A New way to login to the computer which is based on picture touch at specific points you select. This means that you need to specify the points on a picture and then when you would like to resume to your PC, you need to press on those points in the very same way you have had assigned them.
Start Home Screen : The following is the Home Start screen which has all the tiles listen updated in real-time when you are connected to the Internet and when you move towards the right you get different panes with all the applications and programs which you use. The start screen is one place to display and place all the favorite applications and use the drag & drop feature to move the tiles from one pane to another or to another location.
Windows 8 Start Home Screen
You can Zoom Out on the screen and sort all the apps on your Home Screen something like how you would do this on your Tablets like iPad or Tab. Customizing and rearranging is very easy along with making changes to your Icons. The Touch based Control Panel is also meant for easy understanding and the Interface allows you to easily make changes for all the system based settings.
Windows 8 Touch Control Panel
There is a social application which comes pre-installed on the name on ‘Socialite’ which gives access to the News Feed listing all the latest updates from your contacts and also get connected with them.
Windows 8 Socialite App
Sharing & Search : The new OS would support not just multiple apps running in the background but also offer you with the FriendSend or share option to share any information quickly through your contacts. This also comes with Auto Compete & Spell Check feature which makes sure you send perfect mails to others. Along with the now if you would search for something on your computer it would not just search on the local HDD but also the whole web through the Bing search, which is something every user would like. Below is a demo of the same.
Windows 8 Share FriendSend
The Tablet Demo was actually more like showing the Windows 7 Phone Interface demo on the portable tablet and there seemed to be nothing really having a WoW factor but the team tried to discuss about how good the experience is along with ‘Fast and Fluid user experience with animations and Metro style’. All the Applications are available in full screen with support for full keyboard and mouse. All the Apps are connected through the cloud connectivity.
There is a new Store which offers you all the apps organized in sections and rated by users. Even though the whole interface can confuse you but you can easily get familiar to everything within a few minutes. The apps are readily available which would be downloaded and installed onto your computer once they are purchased from the Store. The desktop apps and Metro style apps are all available at the same Store and this clearly hints that Microsoft would soon integrate their current useful software’s into this store.
Note : Along with this the best part was that the Microsoft Corporation gave away a new tablet computer with the Windows 8 on it to get a real experience of the same to the attendees of the event.

How to Monitor Your Computer From Different Location with Dropbox:

There are limitless things which can be done using Dropbox. Few things which we have seen are Multiple Dropbox account on single PCDownl0ad email attachment directly to Dropbox and recover deleted Dropbox files.
Usually monitoring a computer can be done by various software tools. Apart from that one unique way to monitor but not remote access your home computer or office computer is using the Dropbox. Yes, it requires Dropbox to complete the task of monitoring without purchasing the paid software.
Now this remote monitoring is useful in the following examples –
  • To confirm that no one is using your office work PC while you are sleeping at home.
  • Your kids are using your home PC when you are out and you are eager to know what they are doing on your PC in your absence.
  • Your are running task on your PC and wants to track the progress of it at selected time intervals.
Dropbox as a Tool for Remote Monitoring
You might be thinking how this is possible, but its possible in fairly simple way. Since you know the properties of Dropbox that you can get access of your cloud stored files using the online Dropbox interface any time, it uses the same concept.
Here is the procedure to do it -
  • First you need a free image capturing utility which will save the screenshots directly into your Dropbox folder. The softwares like SnagIt can perform this task for you provided you save the files in a Dropbox folder. One utility which we recommend to use is the Screen Grabber.
  • So download Screen Grabber from here.

facebook adds Data security and offers Groups Feature:

After twitter, which is one of the social giant had recently made some cosmetic everyone expected the cosmetic change to happen in facebook too after facebook announced the press conference yesterday. With new features like downloading your own information including your own photos and videos, controlling information access to third party and also inclusion of new groups facebook is now reloaded.
Download your own information:
Facebook is on its way to increase the user satisfaction levels by launching a special feature wherein users can download their facebook information and content in a zip format, just in other words you can term it as a backup. This move comes after several groups criticized facebook over a closed ball room with no back up facility. With this great move from facebook one can download information ranging from photos to status updates to messages to even videos.
facebook backup
Control information access to third party application:
Facebook also came with other important initiative wherein people can now monitor the information accessed by the third party application which accesses the personal data. You can now see the permission you’ve granted to an app which you have granted access as well also a log of information accessed by this third party application. For example, the control panel will show if an application requires access into your friends info as well such as with a birthday calendar. So that accordingly you can control the information accessed and also what information the application has accessed in detail.
facebook application privacy
GROUPS:
Facebook also added new groups option with which it becomes even easier to build your own information space wherein you can create your own group like your cricket team, your classmates, your coffee club etc. Just all you need to do is to create a group, add friends and start sharing. Now with the launch of facebook groups, mailing lists are all set to replace as this helps setting up your group to send an email to you anytime, anyone posts in it. What’s more is, now you can also setup a separate email address for the group so that members can keep in touch when they are not on facebook. The emails which are sent are converted into the posts in the group.
You need not worry with all new facebook groups as these groups are CLOSED by default which means that people in it will only be given access to have the information posted in the group. But the name of the group will be open as it will help your friends can find the right group and can join accordingly. You can also use the settings while creating the group wherein you can put you name and members unlisted aka secret or also you can create groups which have more public settings by setting it “OPEN”.  You can find and create new groups athttp://www.facebook.com/groups.
With a special place in Groups, you can quickly post photos, make plans and also keep up with ongoing conversations and that too with total privacy. You can also group chat with members who are online at that instant of time. This net experience gives you more freedom to express your thoughts privately within an ocean of social indulgence. The new “groups” is more like a micro facebook with added security and comes with enhanced privacy features to give you a secured facebook social experience.
facebook groups
Conclusion
The whole set of initiatives taken by facebook makes fb simpler, transparent and also more importantly secure. Though the groups feature is live now but downloading the facebook information and data is still not active currently though it’ s announced. But as soon as this feature goes live, we will update with the same. With Revamped Groups and a control center to monitor third-party applications will put people at ease who want to play on Facebook without accidental over sharing of personal data including photos and posts.

How Facebook helps Indian filmamkers:

In the era of credit crunch, social networking sites like Facebook and other online communities are fast emerging as tools for independent filmmakers to crowdsource their film projects.

Sanjay Suri-Onir's recently released film 'I Am' is India's largest crowd funded movie with more than 400 producers from over 45 countries. Happy with the success of the 'I Am' experiment, Suri is now crowdsourcing his next film 'Chauranga' again through Facebook. He has already put up some 60 posters of the film and is looking forward to pull in some talent also.

Paris based Indian filmmaker Prashant Nair, who debuts with his film 'Delhi In A Day', also sought help from the French government and online communities to pull in resources for his small budget movie, starring veterans like Lillete Dubey, Victor Banerjee and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

Prashant is looking forward to perfect this method in his next film 'Amrika', which is again based in Delhi and takes a look at the Indian perception of the country.

An open forum, moderated by Reliance Entertainment CEO Sanjeev Lamba and including panelists like actor-producer Sanjay Suri, director Ketan Mehta, Russian director Vicktor Geinsberg and Nair, discussed various methods of co-production and crowd funding on thee sidelines of Mumbai Film Festival.

ImageTalking about his experience, Suri said that an independent filmmaker looking for crowd funding should be prepared, transparent and should have a distribution plan in place. He also said that since the method involves many like minded people, the filmmaker should be prepared that the whole financing will take time.

Talking about the unique methods of film financing, director Ketan Mehta said filmmaker Himanshu Roy was one of the earliest directors to use unorthodox methods to raise finance for his films and then there was Prabhat studio, which was a producers body made of directors. He also talked about Shyam Benegal's film 'Manthan', which was produced by dairy farmers in Gujarat.

Russian filmmaker Vicktor Geinsberg, who made a film on one of the most loved novels ofRussia in the post-Soviet era 'Generation P', said he initially approached the Russian producers to finance the film but was turned down because the film uses a lot of foul language, a taboo in Russian cinema. He then realised that since the film was about an advertising guy, he could raise money from the products featured in the film.

Apple vs. Microsoft: Two Opposite Approaches to Building an OS

Microsoft and Apple are the developers of three of the most popular operating systems in the world (Windows, iOS & Mac OS X), yet their approaches to building the infrastructure that powers laptops, tablets and phones couldn’t be more divergent.
Microsoft recently published a blog post that addressed specific issues that Windows 8 developer preview users had with the start screen.
The Windows 8 team specifically tackles the complaint that the new Windows 8 start screen, which uses the app-style metro interface, isn’t effective at organizing apps (it was originally organized alphabetically) and doesn’t display enough apps on one screen (it originally displayed about 20 apps). Microsoft dives deep into the UX issues of start menus, even calculating how many apps Windows 8 can theoretically fit onto one display at different monitor resolutions.
In the end though, Microsoft concluded that its users were right about the Windows 8 start menu and made two important changes to it as a result. First, it now supports folder-style organization of apps. Secondly, Microsoft is making the start screen denser, meaning that more apps will be visible on a single screen.

The Apple Approach to OS Development

Microsoft’s approach lies in stark contrast to Apple‘s approach to OS development. The notoriously secretive company doesn’t like unveiling products until they are polished. It doesn’t publish detailed stats about how people are using its products. And it rarely makes dramatic changes based on user feedback.
It’s an approach that has worked just fine for Apple (more than fine, in fact). Steve Jobs and his team have been able to develop products and features that users wanted long before users they even knew they wanted them.
“It’s really hard to design products by focus groups,” Steve Jobs told BusinessWeek in 1998. “A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.”
This is why you won’t find an Apple blog that details user behavior in iOS. This is why Apple only gives developers a few months to play with new versions of Mac OS X before they get released to the public, while Microsoft will release a new version of Windows to developers more than a year before its official debut.
Both companies are wildly successful with their operating systems. Windows is still the world’s most popular OS, while Apple keeps selling iPhone and iPads by the millions. But we’re about to see what happens when these two opposing philosophies to development butt heads. Microsoft is preparing for war against the iPad, and Windows 8 is its weapon of choice.
Will Microsoft’s philosophy to development trump Apple’s approach? We don’t know the answer to that question yet, but we do know that the fireworks are just getting started.
Check out the galleries below if you want to do a side-by-side comparison of Apple and Microsoft’s approaches to building an OS. Let us know which philosophy you prefer in the comments.

New Home Screen With Notification

Notifications are a big deal in iOS 5. Taking some cues from Android, iOS has finally unified the notification system and made it less clumsy and intrusive.
Message now appear at the top of the screen (though you can choose to allow them to display in the middle) while you are using the phone and they don't interrupt what you are already doing.

Reliance Industries in talks with global players to launch hi-speed broadband:

Reliance Industries (RIL) is in the process of finalising agreements with global technology players and service providers to offer high speed broadband wireless services in the country, the company said today.

"...Is in the process of setting up a world class broadband wireless network using state-of-art technologies and finalising the arrangement with leading global technology players, service providers and infrastructure providers, application developers, device manufacturers and others to help usher the 4G revolution into India," RIL said in a statement while announcing the second quarter results.

Last year, Mukesh Ambani-led RIL had forayed into the telecom arena with a bang, announcing the acquisition of Infotel, which had emerged as the sole winner of pan-India broadband spectrum, for Rs 4,800 crore.

"Reliance also made a substantial commitment to being a leader in the evolution of India's digital economy by acquiring control of a nationwide broadband wireless access licence. We are fully geared to participate in India's growth and continued global recovery in the coming years," Ambani said.

Steve Jobs: 11 business secrets to know:

artical Picture
Steve Jobs will be remembered as one of the greatest visionaries of our times. What he did for the technological as well as entrepreneurial world, cannot be easily forgotten.
Although I'm young and haven't followed Jobs' career as intently as others, he has taught me a lot about business in last five years. Here are 11 business secrets I learnt from Steve Jobs:
People matter, not features
Everything Jobs built made life easier for you. It was rare to ever hear him babbling about features he created, instead he focused on how these products made life easier for others.
For example, the iPhone enabled you to talk on your phone, watch movies, record movies, and listen to music. As simple as that may sound, without an iPhone you may have to had to carry around a cell phone, mp3 player, and a video recorder. Because of him your pockets are much lighter.
He taught me, along with many others, not to focus on just adding features or creating products. First and foremost, you need to focus on solving problems that people are experiencing. If you can do that, you'll stay ahead of the curve.
There’s nothing wrong with pre-selling
Most companies launch products and then sell them. Jobs didn't do that with Apple. He let the public know what he was going to sell them, how it solved their problems, and that they could pre-order the product online.
You can do the same thing. Don't wait for your product or service to be released. Start selling it now. The money you earn today will help cover your costs and it will help solve any cash flow issues you may encounter during distribution.
Keep it simple, silly
I switched from a PC to a Mac because Macs are much easier to use. Or at least they are for my dad and 1-year-old nephew. Every Apple product I bought during Steve's tenure was simple to use.
He also created cool looking devices, but above all else his products were simple to use. For example, the iPad was the first device I was ever able to give my dad that required little to no instruction. There are no shut down or start options, you just click on applications and start using them.
If you want more applications, you just go to the App Store and download them.
Don't try to make your solutions complicated. Keep it simple... even if that means you have to strip off the bells and whistles. If you aren't creating usable solutions, it will be harder to gain traction.
Think big
If you are in business, you are there to make money. If not, you shouldn't be an entrepreneur. If you are going to create a business, create one that changes the world.
Apple isn't just a technology company, Steve Jobs changed the world. His products are used all around the world and by everyone. This is why Apple is the largest company in the world.
You won't be able to create a big company unless you solve big problems. Although you can make a nice living by conquering a small niche, you wont make billions doing it.
Focus, focus and focus some more
When you look at Apple's website, it seems like they have a lot of products, right? Well, for being a hundred-billion dollar company, they actually don't.
Jobs was smart, he always focused his energy on a few big products instead of trying to create thousands of small ones. In other words, he went for big wins instead of looking to hit singles and doubles.
With your business you shouldn't try to do multiple things. Just focus your time and energy on one product or service. As long as your core business continues to grow, you shouldn't do anything else. The moment your growth slows down and flattens, that's when you should expand.
Create an ecosystem
I never really understood the power of creating a platform until the iPhone was released. When the phenomenon hit the market and companies started to create applications, Apple grew to have a huge ecosystem.
Not only were they selling their products, other companies started to build products on the Apple platform and their customers were encouraged to buy and use Apple products.
By this point Apple didn't have to sell their products, other companies were doing it for them.
Steve Jobs created an ecosystem and he was able to do it around Apple products. If you want to grow a brilliant idea, you have to create an ecosystem for that idea to flourish.
There’s always room for innovation
The iPod wasn't the first mp3 player. There were hundreds of others that were already out before Apple released the iPod. That didn't discourage Jobs from entering the space... he just one upped everyone by creating a better product.
These days if you are looking to buy a music player, the first thing comes to your mind is the iPod, right? And what's the second brand that comes to your mind? Ummmmm... That's right, they demolished all of their competitors. The only other device that I can think of is the Zune, which kind of sucks.
Don't be afraid to enter a saturated market... you just have to be willing to stir things up. If you can innovate, you will win. If you decide to create another me-too company, expect to be crushed.
Be passionate
Did you know that Steve Jobs had a salary of $1 a year? That's right, he didn't care for money and he stated it publicly. He cared about the company, their products, and changing peoples' lives.
If you love what you are doing, you are going to work harder and be more likely to succeed. Heck, Jobs even worked hard when he was sick... that's how much he loved what he was doing.
Don't just do things for the money, do things because you love what you are doing. You aren't going to live forever, so enjoy your life while you can.
Ummmmm…
That's right, they demolished all of their competitors. The only other device that I can think of is the Zune, which kind of sucks.
Don't be afraid to enter a saturated market... you just have to be willing to stir things up. If you can innovate, you will win. If you decide to create another me-too company, expect to be crushed.
Never lose your investors money
Although Steve Jobs wasn't the CEO throughout all of Apple's history, he always took care of the company. He came back, and turned the company around. In other words, he grew shareholder money and took care of his investors.
As I stated earlier, Apple is the biggest company in the world. It's very difficult to create a decent size company without taking money from investors... so make sure you take care of them. And if you do so, they'll always take care of you.
Another great leader who also has a very similar rule is Warren Buffett. If you can take care of the people who are feeding you, they'll constantly be willing to reciprocate.
You’re nothing without your team
Apple has a ton of benefits: from onsite fitness centers to tuition assistance, they even have cafeterias with organic food. Why did they do all of this? To take care of their employees.
A big part of being a good leader is realizing that you have to have a good team. It's impossible to do everything yourself. If you don't take care of your employees and show your appreciation, you'll quickly lose them.
If you take care of your employees they'll put their blood, sweat and tears into your company.
Don’t Forget about your friends and family
As an entrepreneur when you work so hard for so many years, you tend to forget about your friends and family. All you do is live, sleep and breathe business.
At the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with that, but you also have to spend time with your friends and family. Money will always be there, but your friends and family won't.
When Steve Jobs got sick, he left Apple to spend his final moments with his friends and family. He knew what was important to him. You too need to figure out what's important to you no matter how much time your business or job takes from your life, don't forget about what's important.

Lenovo beats Dell to become no. 2:

Hewlett-Packard Co's personal computer shipments grew 5.3 per cent in the third quarter, while China's Lenovo overtook Dell to become the world's No. 2 PC maker for the first time, according to data from two influential research firms.

HP -- which is scrambling to decide whether to sell, keep or spin off its PC division by the end of October -- now commands a 17.7 per cent share of an ailing global market, up marginally from 17.3 per cent a year ago, tech research houseGartner said.

Rival firm IDC put HP's market share at 18.1 per cent. IDC also ranked HP, Lenopvo and Dell Nos. 1, 2 and 3.

Wall Street analysts had speculated a premature announcement about the potential spinoff of HP's largest division would drive customers away.

Lenovo, aided by a laptop-sales tie-up with Japan's NEC and aggressive marketing, expanded its market share to 13.5 per cent from 11.1 per cent, eclipsing Dell's 11.6 per cent.

PC sales are sputtering as consumers turn increasingly to mobile devices from smartphones to tablets like Apple Inc's iPad, while faltering economies pressure corporate spending on technology hardware.

But IDC foresaw a bounceback in 2012 as HP and other PC makers begin to crank out smaller "ultra-mobile" computers.

"For the moment, PCs have taken a backseat to a range of other devices competing for shrinking consumer and business budgets," said Jay Chou, senior research analyst with IDC.

"While growth is expected to stay in mid-single digits in the fourth quarter, we should see faster growth in 2012 and beyond."

U.S. PC shipments edged up just 1.1 per cent to 17.8 million units in the third quarter, according to Gartner. While anemic, that marked the first time shipments had grown in three straight quarters. HP notably expanded its shipments by 15.1 per cent in its home market, the firm said.

"Despite the potential spinoff of its PC business, HP executives' efforts to give the appearance of 'business as usual' seemed to work," Gartner wrote in its statement.

Emerging markets -- such as Lenovo's backyard, China -- remain however a rare bright spot in an otherwise gloomy outlook.

"The PC industry has been performing below normal seasonality," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. "As expected, back-to-school PC sales were disappointing in mature markets, confirming that the consumer PC market continues to be weak. The popularity of non-PC devices, including media tablets, such as the iPad and smartphones, took consumers' spending away from PCs.
"As the PC market faced a slowdown, vendor consolidation has become a more apparent trend in the industry. Lenovo's recent merger with NEC, and its acquisition of Medion, as well as HP's announcement that it may spin off or sell its PC business, underlined this trend during the quarter."

This Karva Chauth, see the moon through your mobile, courtesy Tanishq:

Jewellery brand Tanishq has created a mobile application for Karva Chauth that turns the screen of the phone into a sieve (chalni), through which one can see the moon. The app has been created for Andriod, Apple and Symbian platforms and can be viewed on the Tanishq Facebook page.

Bhuwan Gaurav, Head, Marketing, Tanishq, said, “With young girls and the newly married bahus, being active on social networking sites, like Facebook, such an app will surely create buzz amongst women. We are confident that this kind of an initiative will help the brand engage with traditionally rooted modern Indian women at a newer level. This is yet another example of great synergy of our rich Indian culture with technology and we at Tanishq are happy to bring to our customers.”

5 Things To Do Every Day For Success

"You get up at what time?"
I hear that a lot, along with "You are so lucky." So, I'm going to help out here and let you in on the secrets of my success. Well, not all of them--but enough to show you the foundation I build on every day.

2. Read the headlines and watch the news. Not only should you know what is going on in the world, you will also be the first to recognize opportunities (if you followed #1) for you and your business--long before the competition has even had their first cup of coffee.
3. Send something to one person who can hire you or buy your product--something you promised to follow-up with, a quick email with a link to something relevant or a "Hey, just checking in to see how thing are going" email.
4. Touch base with an old friend or associate you haven't talked to in ages. Ask how they are, what are they working on and ask or suggest how you might help. You'll make their day.
5. Write a handwritten note to someone. Seriously. It is a lost art and makes quite an impression. There is always someone you can send a thank you note to--or you aren't doing things correctly.
A simple yet highly effective list. Try all five every weekday for a month. Then, tell me I'm right. If I'm wrong, I'll buy you a cup of coffee. When you finally wake up ...
